Primary treatment of sewage
The main purpose of primary treatment is to remove
- paper
- rags
- wood
- other rubish
- grit and
- silt
which could cause blockages or damage machinery.
Some of the suspended material in the water is also removed by settling
or sedimentation.
The exact procedures used vary from plant to plant but often involve
- removal of gross debris using metal screens or bars or a device which
chops up the debris
- removal of silt and grit using a grit chamber, and
- removal of suspended matter by sedimentation.
