Separation of solid material by sedimentation

Some of the solid material from the incoming water (usually river water) will settle out if the water is left to stand for several days in a large tank or reservoir.

A useful side effect of this process is the death of many of the pathogens present in the water. Typically, 90% of the pathogens present will die after 7 days of storage. The remaining pathogens will be killed later when the water is disinfected.
