The shape of the phosphate ion

The phosphate ion carries a 3 minus charge and contains a phosphorus atom in an oxidation state of +5 and three oxygen atoms each in an oxidation state of -2. It is sometimes referred to as the phosphate(V) ion.

The phosphate ion has a tetrahedral shape with bond angles slightly distorted from the regular tetrahedral case of about 109.5°.
